signed 1 Sep 1810 by Rich'd York & Eben'r Smith before Jonathan Rowe &
Archibald York; no wives or dower rights are mentioned; acknowledge 16 Jan 1812
by Richard York & Ebenezer Smith before Wentworth Cheswill JP; received &
recorded 6 Apr 1812 [Rockingham Co NH Deeds 191?/120, abstracted by Laird C
Towle from a photocopy of the deed book 3/2000].  [???????????? This is an
unusual deed.  As I read it, 50 rods is taken off the end of Smith's lot along
the road, and combined with a 12 rod strip of the west side of York's land to
create a 62 sq rod lot for Hodgdon.  This left the back end of Smith's lot
landlocked - hence the passage rights.  Smith and York are each selling their
own property - no joint ownership is implied.  This is only the second record I
have seen that mentions Archibald York.  The wife of Richard York was
apparently deceased.  Note the York/Smith association here.]

An article entitled "Grammy Left You Breathless" appeared in NH Profiles,
November 1964 which describes the experiences of the author, Robert F Denvir,
as a summer boarder at Home Nook Farm in Chester NH which was run by Mrs James
W Towle.  Grammy is described as having only an arm and a half, having lost the
lower part of her right arm in a threshing machine accident on her father's
farm in Maine at age 12.  She is also identified as the step-mother of Ed Towle
who was old enough to drive a "democrat wagon" at the time.  It is said she
drove the children to school in the democrat wagon or by slay.  She lived to
the 79.  No other family data is given.  The subject of this sketch appears to
be Valeria (Lewis, Smith) Towle.
