  1927 Mar 12 - Mr Charles W Towle of Fremont d at Exeter Hospital ae 41y 2m.  
   Fremont - "For the third time, the whole town is called to mourn for the
untimely death of one of our young men, Charles W. Towle, who in the prime of
life, has been called to lay down his implements on earth and to pass to the
higher life.  He was born in Chester, Jan. 14, 1887, the son of the late James
W. Towle, of that town.  As a small boy he came with his mother to this town to
live in the ancestral home near the village, which has since been his
residence.  He married Miss Clara Willey, daughter of George F. Willey, Jan.
20, 1912.  He was a member of the order of the American Mechanics, General
Marston Council, of Atkinson, and also of Fremont Grange.  Besides the esteemed
widow, he leaves to mourn his loss his devoted mother, two young sons, Gerald
C. and George W., also a sister, Mrs. Ernest S Beede of this town, and two
brothers, James Towle of Exeter, and Edward of Chester, and a host of friends.  
The funeral services were Wednesday in the Church by pastor, Rev. Mr. Stotts.  
"Charlie," as he was always called, has gone, but he has left a good name
behind him and will not soon be forgotten.  'Every Year the Father calleth Some
loved ones to eternal rest, And our hearts, though filled with anguish, Can but
cry, "He knowest best"'."

Neighbors for their kind acts and expressions of sympathy during the illness
and loss of our loved one; and for the beautiful floral tributes we give

& his wife; you [LCT] are named for a classmate [Gerald C Towle, 1983].

  Charles Wm Towle worked at Spaulding & Frost; Clara A Willey was badly
burned as a child, and did not expect to have children; she lived in the 2nd
house up from the church in Fremont; son George lived on the 1st floor there
after getting married; Clara was teaching school in Fremont when she married;
she went back to schol teaching after the death of her husband; she always
taught in Fremont until she began teaching in Saugus MA late in life; she was
working in Saugus when she came down with her final illness; she worked at
other jobs in the summer; she worked in food service at the Y in Boston
c1944-5, and did waitress work at Ogunquit ME at least one summer [Gladys
(Willey, Page) Philbrick, c1983].

Day card the following spring from New York, and was not heard from after that

  1936 Jul - Petition for divorce presented to the Superior Court of
Rockingham County NH:
  "Wilma L. Towle, of Brentwood in said County, complains against Gerald C.
Towle, of said Brentwood, and says that she was lawfully married to him at
Fremont, in said County, on the fifth day of February, 1933, and that she has
always behaved as a dutiful, faithful wife.
  "Yet the said Gerald C. Towle, wholly regrdless of his marriage covenant,
has been guilty of extreme cruely toward said libellent, and has committed
assaults upon his said wife and on the nineth day of July, last, threw her
violently upon a couch and struck her with his fist so that she was rendered
unconscious and her face discolored and made swollen; that at various other
times between the first day of July, 1934, and the ninth day of July, 1936, has
struck and committed other assaults upon his said wife.
  "The said Wilma L. Towle and Gerald C. Towle, since their intermarriage, has
resided in Raymond, insaid County, and in Brentwood, in said County, and the
said libellee has resided and now resides in said Brentwood.
  "That one child, Laird, was born to said Wilma L. Towle and Gerald C. Towle
on the thirteenth day of September, 1933.
  "Wherefore said Wilma L. Towle prays that a divorce from the bonds of
matrimony between herself and said Gerald C. Towle be decreed; that the custody
of said Laird Towle be awarded to the said Wilma L. Towle; that provision for
the support of the said Wilma L. Towle and her child be decreed; that during
the pendency of this libel, the said Gerald C. Towle be ordered to provide for
the support of his said wife and child; and for such other relief as may be

  1936 Jul 31 - Gerald C Towle was served with divorce papers ordering him to
appear at the Superior Court in Exeter on the fourth Tuesday in October 1936
[Rock Co NH Div File #3217, microfilm #31-1162].

  1936 Aug 6 - the Master, Amos S Rundlett of Exeter, heard the divorce case
and made the following findings and recommendations:
  "(1) that the total earnings for the first thiry weeks of this year totals
$652.39 or an average wage of $21.74 per week.  The pay at the present time is
very small as the machinery in the shop is being moved to Erving, Mass.  Last
week he earned about $7.63, and thinks it will be less this week probably about
$5.00.  He has paid his wife $17.00 in the last four weeks.  He now lives with
his parents.
  "(2) Mrs. Towle has hired three rooms for which she pays $5.pr month.  The
boy has whooping cough and is under the care of the doctor who has made three
visits already as child also has bronchitis.
  "(3) Mrs. Towle is also under the doctor's care for a nervous condition and
also internal troubles.
  "(4) Mrs. Towle has taken some of the furniture to fix up her rooms and has
a few pieces stored.
  "It is recommended:
  "A. That the libellant have the custody of the child and the libellee to
have the opportunity to see child at reasonable times, and also to have child
with him from Satruday after-noon to Sunday after-noons.
  "B. That none of the furniture be sold by either party until after hearing
upon the merits of the libel.
  "C. That Libelee pay to libellant $5.pr week until Sept. 5 '36 and $8.per
week thereafter for the support of the libellant and child." [Rock Co NH Div

  1936 Dec 3 - Wilma L Towle was granted a divorce from Gerald C Towle on
grounds of extreme cruely; she was give custody of their child, Laird; Gerald
was to pay $5 per week alimony & child support when earning less that $15.00
per week, and $7 per week when earning more [Rock Co NH Div File #3217,
microfilm #31-1162].

  1937 Mar - Petition of Wilma L Towle to Superior Court re Equity case #3217:
   "Wilma L. Towle, of Exeter, in the County of Rockingham and State of New
Hampshire, petitioner in the above libel states that on December 3rd, last, a
divoce from Gerald C.Towle, of Brentwood, in said County, was granted and an
order for support was issued by said court for five dollars per week.  That
said libellee has never paid the full amount in accordance with said order
since February 13th, last, and he is now behind in his payments in the sum of
ten dollars, and that said payments are necessary for the support of said
libellant and her child.  That at present said libellee may earn more than
twelve dollars per week in which case the said libellant is entittled to seven
dollars and fifty cents per week.  That said libellee is now employed outside
of the State of New hampshire, rendering it impossible for said libellant to
learn the correct amount which said libellee may now earn.
  "Wherefore said libellant prays that said libellee may be committed for

  [At the bottom of the typed document is a hand-written notation: "Mar 10,
1937 - Order to issue in accordance with prayer.  Clerk of Court to hear case
as Master."  this is followed by an illegible signature which is probably that
of the judge; it is not the signature of Ernest G Templeton, attorney for WLT,
nor is it the signature of Amos S Rundlett, the Clerk of the Superior Court
[LCT].

   "Wilma L. Towle, of Exeter, in the County of Rockingham and State of New
Hampshire, petitioner in the above libel states that on December 3rd, last, a
decree of divorce from Gerald C. Towle, of Brentwood, in said County, was
granted and an order for support was issued by said court for five dollars per
week.  That there is due from said libellee two payments due in February,last;
that he has failed to make any payments for the last five weeks, and he is now
behind in his payments in the sum of thirty-five dollars, and that said
payments are necessary for the support of said libellant and her child.

  "Wilma L. Towle, of Brentwood in said County, complains against Gerald C.
Towle, of said Brentwood, and says that she was lawfully married to him at
Fremont, in said County, on the fifth day of February, 1933, and that she has
always behaved as a dutiful, faithful wife.
  "Yet the said Gerald C. Towle, wholly regrdless of his marriage covenant,
has been guilty of extreme cruely toward said libellent, and has committed
assaults upon his said wife and on the nineth day of July, last, threw her
violently upon a couch and struck her with his fist so that she was rendered
unconscious and her face discolored and made swollen; that at various other
times between the first day of July, 1934, and the ninth day of July, 1936, has
struck and committed other assaults upon his said wife.
  "The said Wilma L. Towle and Gerald C. Towle, since their intermarriage, has
resided in Raymond, insaid County, and in Brentwood, in said County, and the
said libellee has resided and now resides in said Brentwood.
  "That one child, Laird, was born to said Wilma L. Towle and Gerald C. Towle
on the thirteenth day of September, 1933.
  "Wherefore said Wilma L. Towle prays that a divorce from the bonds of
matrimony between herself and said Gerald C. Towle be decreed; that the custody
of said Laird Towle be awarded to the said Wilma L. Towle; that provision for
the support of the said Wilma L. Towle and her child be decreed; that during
the pendency of this libel, the said Gerald C. Towle be ordered to provide for
the support of his said wife and child; and for such other relief as may be

  1936 Jul 31 - Gerald C Towle was served with divorce papers ordering him to
appear at the Superior Court in Exeter on the fourth Tuesday in October 1936

  1936 Aug 6 - the Master, Amos S Rundlett of Exeter, heard the divorce case
and made the following findings and recommendations:
  "(1) that the total earnings for the first thiry weeks of this year totals
$652.39 or an average wage of $21.74 per week.  The pay at the present time is
very small as the machinery in the shop is being moved to Erving, Mass.  Last
week he earned about $7.63, and thinks it will be less this week probably about
$5.00.  He has paid his wife $17.00 in the last four weeks.  He now lives with
his parents.
  "(2) Mrs. Towle has hired three rooms for which she pays $5.pr month.  The
boy has whooping cough and is under the care of the doctor who has made three
visits already as child also has bronchitis.
  "(3) Mrs. Towle is also under the doctor's care for a nervous condition and
also internal troubles.
  "(4) Mrs. Towle has taken some of the furniture to fix up her rooms and has
a few pieces stored.
  "It is recommended:
  "A. That the libellant have the custody of the child and the libellee to
have the opportunity to see child at reasonable times, and also to have child
with him from Satruday after-noon to Sunday after-noons.
  "B. That none of the furniture be sold by either party until after hearing
upon the merits of the libel.
  "C. That Libelee pay to libellant $5.pr week until Sept. 5 '36 and $8.per
week thereafter for the support of the libellant and child." [Rock Co NH Div

  1936 Dec 3 - Wilma L Towle was granted a divorce from Gerald C Towle on
grounds of extreme cruely; she was give custody of their child, Laird; Gerald
was to pay $5 per week alimony & child support when earning less that $15.00
per week, and $7 per week when earning more [Rock Co NH Div File #3217,
microfilm #31-1162].

  1937 Mar - Petition of Wilma L Towle to Superior Court re Equity case #3217:
   "Wilma L. Towle, of Exeter, in the County of Rockingham and State of New
Hampshire, petitioner in the above libel states that on December 3rd, last, a
divoce from Gerald C.Towle, of Brentwood, in said County, was granted and an
order for support was issued by said court for five dollars per week.  That
said libellee has never paid the full amount in accordance with said order
since February 13th, last, and he is now behind in his payments in the sum of
ten dollars, and that said payments are necessary for the support of said
libellant and her child.  That at present said libellee may earn more than
twelve dollars per week in which case the said libellant is entittled to seven
dollars and fifty cents per week.  That said libellee is now employed outside
of the State of New hampshire, rendering it impossible for said libellant to
learn the correct amount which said libellee may now earn.
  "Wherefore said libellant prays that said libellee may be committed for

as Master."  this is followed by an illegible signature which is probably that
of the judge; it is not the signature of Ernest G Templeton, attorney for WLT,
nor is it the signature of Amos S Rundlett, the Clerk of the Superior Court
[LCT].

Active in community

Ruth I. Simpson, 84, formerly of Waldron Towers, died late Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Langdon Place of Dover with her family by her side.

Born January 13, 1919 in Worcester, MA she was the daughter of the late Charles L. Buzzell and Clyde L. (Brown) Buzzell.

Ruth graduated from Coe-Brown Academy in 1937. She was a past member of the Women’s Auxiliary in Northwood, 8/40 Auxiliary, Northwood Women’s Club and the Back River Community Club.

Ruth was a homemaker and loved the ocean. She also enjoyed reading and loved her cat Simba

Ruth was pre-deceased by three sisters, Meryl Burklund, Ruth Buzzell, and Wilma Regan.

She is survived by one son, Robert Simpson, Jr. and his wife LeeAnn of Dover; two daughters, Dawn Delude and her husband Richard of Durham, Maureen Pomeroy and her husband Norman of Gulf Breeze, FL., five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Services were March 5 from the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, with The Reverend Ann Robertson, officiating.
