before him; he attended the town schools & Franklin Academy in Dover; farmer of
samll fruits & vegetables; m 7 Nov 1897 Anna Belle McRae of Barrington who
survived him; held several town offices including Auditor & Moderator; on his
nothers side he descended from Elie de Merit who had his first grant of land in
Dover 11 Apr 1694; the 1st s/o the immigrant was Eli b 1 Mar 1696 who marr
Tabitha Pitman (d/o Nathaniel Pitman, one of the 1st settlers of Dover who had
a grant of 30a 23 Jun 1701 which included the land where the present Tibbetts
house stands (which may have been built by him)); Ebenezer DeMerritt b 20 Apr
1726 s/o Eli & Tabitha, lived in this house during his life, as did his son
Ebenezer 2nd; the 1st Ebenezer was Town Clerk when Madbury was set off as a
parish with town privileges in 1755, which office he held until his death 21
Apr 1776; he was succeded by his cousin and neighbor John DeMeritt from 1776 to
1802, but in 1803 Ebenezer 2nd took the office and served untill 1808; in 1815
James Young DeMeritt, s/o Ebenezer 2nd, became Town Clerk and served till 1847;
thus three of the early town clerks were born, lived, and died in this the
Ebenezer DeMeritt House; Mr Tibbetts was the gggs/o Ebenezer 1st through his
grandfather Eli Demeritt [Madbury Annual Report].

of the oldest in Madbury; one his maternal side he descends from Eli de Merit
who had his 1st grant of land 11 Apr 1694; Eli's son Eli, b 1 Mar 1696, marr
Tabitha Pitman, d/o Nathaniel Pitman who had a grant of 30a on __ Jun 1701
where the Tibbetts house stands today; the Tibbett's house may have been built
by [the 2nd Eli?]; Ebenezer DeMerritt, s/o Eli & Tabitha, who was b 20 Apr 1726
certainly lived in this house, as did his son Ebenezer II; this property
remained in the DeMeritt family until George's grandfather, Charles E Tibbetts,
marr Sarah A Demeritt; since then the house has been in the Tibbetts family;
Charles & Sarah had a son Frank E Tibbetts who was born & lived in this house;
frank marr 7 Nov 1897 Anna Belle McRae of Barrington; George E Tibbetts was b _
Apr 1902, one of their ten children; George was a farmer all his life & for
15yrs worked at the poultry plant of John H Rowe; he never married; he d 10 Jul
