The Church Records of the Rev. Hugh Adams (Principally at Oyster River Parish {now Durham}N.H.) has the
following record under the heading of received into the church - Dec.21, 1721 Joseph [and] Hannah Catland, chn of
Lydia Catland.It is believed, and is part of family tradition that he lost both parents at a very young age and was subsequently raised by
a Daniel Meader, an ardent Quaker, who raised Joseph according to his religious persuasion.John Meader - Born in England about 1630 died at Oyster River N.H. in 1712. He came to America about 1650 and
married Abigail Follett about 1653. Their children were:
John, Joseph, Elizabeth, Sarah and Nathaniel.
Nathaniel, the third son, and youngest child was born at Oyster River, 14 June 1671 and died 23 Mar. 1704. He married
about 1687 someone named Eleanor and they had 2 children before he died. The eldest son was Daniel, also born at
Oyster River - Nov 3, 1698.
Daniel had 7 sons. But it is probably this Daniel who is the one who raised Joseph CARTLAND
On a petition in 1669 to make Dover a township the name John Meaders is listed. This ref. is p.58 - probably from
History of Dover. Vol.1, Mar.1900 by John Scales which is about Persons and Places in Old Dover, N.H.

Somerworth's Army in 1746 is composed of a long list of names including a John Catland (sic), probably a
typographical error. Name not in present genealogical records.LEE, New Hampshire, Stafford county.
In the north part of this town lies Wheelwrights's Pond, containing about 165 acres, and forming the principal source of
the Oyster River.
This pond is memorable for the battle which was fought near it , in 1690,between a scouting party of Indians and two
companies of rangers, under Captains Floyd and Wiswall. The engagement last two hours. Wiswall, his lieutenant,
sergeant, and twelve men were killed, and several wounded. Floyd continued to fight till his men, wearied and wounded,
drew off, and obliged him to follow. The enemy also retreated.
From the north-east extremity of Epping, the Lamprey River enters Lee, and after a serpentine course of about seven
miles, it passes into Durham. Other parts of the town are watered by Little, North and Oyster Rivers.Distance: Thirty-one miles east south-east from Concord, and twelve miles south-west from Dover.
Dover - Bellamy Bank or Black River. Situated about 12 miles from the ocean. Society of Friends established at an
early period and formerly comprised about one-third of the population.
