  On discharge certificate John Willey states he was priv in Co A 11th NH Vol
Inf; enlisted by Horace C Bacon at Epping NH 11 Aug 1862 to serve 3 yrs; born
Barnstead NH; ae 44; 5' 5.5" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair;
shoemaker; during last two months was unfit for duty 60 days; stationed at
Concord NH on 8 May 1865; discharged at Concord 17 May 1865.
  On application for invalid pension dated 30 May 1865 John Willey ae 44, res
of Epping NH, states that he enl at Epping 28 Aug 1862 as priv in Co A 11th NH
Vol; discharged 17 May 1865; while on duty with regiment at Spotsylvania Court
House he was taken prisoner & carried to Andersonville GA & confined 4 mos;
from there went to Charleston & kept 4 wks; from there to Florence SC for 2
mos; while there attacked by chronic diarhea which was followed by dropsey; now
much bloated with constant swelling of the bowels; now resides in Epping NH and
is unable to work.
  On 28 Oct 1868 John Willey of Epping complains to pension office that he has
not been receiving his pension.
  The file contains numerous doctors reports and requests for an increase in
his pension, e.g., on 7 Jun 1879 John Willey of Fremont ae 58 applies for a
pension increase; his post office is at West Epping.
  On 19 Apr 1892 Eugene D Sanborn ae 21, town clerk of Fremont NH, states that
Johnn Willey d Fremont on 12 Mar 1892 ae 72 yrs; a farmer b Barnstead.
  On 25 Mar 1892 Emily A B Hartford ae 48 & Eliza Trickey ae 77, residents of
Fremont state that on 24 Aug 1881 they were nurses present when Etta J
(Williams) Willey, wife of John Willey, gave birth to her 3rd child, Nellie May
Willey.
  On 3 May 1892 Samuel J Willey ae 50, legal guardian of Nellie M Willey,
states that John Willey d 12 Mar 1892 leaving only 1 child under ae 16, namely
Nellie May Willey who was b 24 Aug 1881.
  On 23 May 1892 Eugene D Sanborn, ae 23, town clerk of Fremont, states that
John Willey of Fremont ae 45 & Ruthetta Williams of same ae 18 were married on
10 Dec 1873.
  Affidavit of Albert C Buswell MD of Epping states that he delivered Nellie
May Willey on 24 Aug 1881.
  On 19 Jul 1892 the clerk of the Rock Co Superior Court states that John
Willey of Fremont libellant and Ruthetta J Willey of same libellee were
divorced on 3 Oct 1886.
  On 2 Apr 1893 A [Atwood] W Purington of Epping ae 39 and Rhuelie [sic?] R
Smith of Fremont ae 55 state that they had known Ruthetta Williams since she
was a child & that she had not been married prior to marrying John Willey; that
she left home when the child was about 5 yrs old and went to Haverhill MA; that
she may have later gone to Boston MA; that her husband divorced her, and she
has not been heard from since; that Nellie May Willey was her only child under
16 on 12 March 1892.
  On 29 Apr 1893 - a pension was approved for Nellie M Willey, b 24 Aug 1881,
minor child of John Willey; document states that the soldier d 12 Mar 1892
having last married on 10 Dec 1873 & divorced 3 Oct 1886; Samuel J Willey had
been apptd guardian of the child on 16 Mar 1892.

Nottingham d/o John Morrill & Lydia Hall; they had one child who dy; Lovilla
ran off with one H Hall while Samuel J was away in the Civil War; on his return
from the war he m2 21 Feb 1865 at Raymond Ann E Hartford (b 1849 Fremont; d 19
May 1929 Fremont; d/o John Frank Hartford & Elizabeth H Guptill); he formally
divorced Lovilla Morrill on 12 Apr 1887, and remarried Ann E Hartford the
following April 16th in order to prevent any questions regarding the legality
of their first marriage; he served in the Civil War for about 3yrs, and was
injured in the chest & spine by the collapse of a breast-works while on picket
duty before Petersburg VA; this resulted in some permenant injuries for which
he was awarded a pension beginning in 1907; he was a shoemaker and farmer; his
wife was blind in her later years; he had four children by Ann E Hartford.

suggests that John F Hartford and his two wives may all have been from Berwick
ME [Laird C Towle].

Willey, d at his home on Beede Road last Sunday morning; his health had long
been impared; he was b Fremont 1843; marr Ann E Hartford in 1864 & had 4
childred: George, John & Plummer, and dau Mrs Lizzie Thompson of Plaistow; they
all survive him as well as his widow & several grand & great grandchildren; the
funeral was held at the home at 2pm Tuesday,, and was conducted by Rev Mr
Little of Epping; burial in North Side Cem; the GAR commital service was
performed by a Civil War veteran & his wife, Charles True of Chester; WWI
veterans, Albert Fuller, George Bassett, Walter Blye & Howard French
constituted the firing squad [Exeter News-Letter 22 Jul 1927].

  Samuel Willey was struck by lightning, but survived; he was an officer in
the northern army in the Civil War; my clearest memory of him is riding on a
white horse in the Memorial Day parade [Gerald C Towle, 1983].

  Samuel Willey lead the Memorial Day parade in Fremont for many years; he is
buried in the Leavitt Cem in North Fremont; his wife Annie went blind in her
old age; she attended the Adventist Church in West Epping [Gladys (Willey,

  Civil War Pension file for Samuel J Willey cert 158690:
  Declaration - 14 Jun 1879 - Samuel J Willey ae 36 of Fremont NH states he
was enlisted 28 Aug 18__ into Co A 11th NH Vols by Capt Horace C Bacon;
discharged at Alexandria VA 4 Jun 1865 ae 36, 5' 7.5" tall, light complexion,
brown hair, blue eyes; at front of Petersburg VA about 15 Jul 1864 was injured
in breast & spine by the caving in of a breast works in which he was doing
picket duty; has never recovered & can only work 1/2 time; lived in Fremont
since his discharge; shoemaker before & after war; post office at West Epping
NH.
  Affidavit dated 26 Jun 1879 by Alonzo S Langmaid of Lee NH ae 37 & Charles E
Parks ae 37 of Epping states they were with Samuel J Willey at Petersburg, and
on duty at the time of the accident, and recall he did not return to duty for
one or two months after the accident.
  Affidavit by Samuel J Willey - 2 Apr 1881, ae 37; for five years before
enlisted he was a shoemaker when not in school; since discharge has lived in
Fremont except for about 1 yr after discharge when he lived in Epping; incured
about 15 Jul 1864 while on picket duty in front of Petersburg VA when a breast
work caved in on him, injuring his breast & spine; attended by Dr Nath'l
Batchelder of Epping who is now deceased; not able to do hard work; has worked
at shoemaking and peddling since discharge.
  Affidavit 8 Mar 1882 by J C N Moore, company doctor, states he treated
Willey for seveeral weeks after the accident.
  Affidavit by Samuel J Willey ae 39 of Epping NH, 17 Jun 1882; cannot provide
testimony of any physician who attended him since his discharge because Dr
Batchelder d 1880, but he continues to use plasters & liniments proscribed by
him.
  Another affidavit similar to above dated 8 Feb 1883; pension rejected 5 May
1883 for lack of medical evidence.
  Another affidavite dated 20 Nov 1885 at ae 42.
  Letter dated 25 May 1885 from Geo F Beede to Hon H[?] W Blair states the SJW
has wife & four children.
  Affidavit 20 Nov 1885 by George F Willey ae 19 of Fremont, s/o SJW, states
that as far as he can remember his father could not do manual labor; that he &
his mother & younger brother, John C Willey ae 16, have often had to pick SJW
out of bed; that SJW can only work about six months out of the year.
  Affidavit 27 Sep 1890 by Louisa Purington ae 48 of Epping states that she is
a sister of SJW, and that from 1865 to 1870 he lived at her house where she
tended to him, and since 1870 he has lived in Fremont.
  Affidavit 5 Jul 1899 by SJW states he marr Anne E Hartford 16 Apr 1887 at
Fremont; that he was previously marr to Lovilla J Morrill who he div 12 Apr
1887; that he & Annie have living children:

  Affidavit 21 Aug 1916 by SJW states he was b 23 Mar 1843 at Fremont; he marr
to Ann Elizabeth Hartford 11 Apr 1887 at Fremont by Charles W Follett JP; he
was first marr 1860, day & month forgotten & no official or church record
found, to Lovilla J Morrill; they div 12 Apr 1887; present wife was not
previously married; living with present wife by whom he had children:

signed her name).

Nov 1848 at Fremont; "Samuel J. Willey was married to Lovilla Morrill before he
entered the war and during his absence, she was married to H Hall and when S.J.
Willey came home on furlough he considered he had a right to marry again,
therefore, said Samuel J. Willey married the applicant February 26, 1864.
  "In after years a question came up as to whether this marriage was legal,
therefore he obtained a divorce from his first wife April 12, 1887 and
remarried the said applicant, Ann E. Willey Apr 16, 1887."

  Affidavit 20 Dec 1927 by Clerk of the Superior Court for Rockingham Co
states that Samuel J Willey of Fremont, libellant, divorced from Lovilla J
Willey of same for adultery on 1st Tues of April 1887.
  Deposition by Emily A B Hartford ae 82 of Raymond & Phineas Beede ae 85 of
Fremont states that they knew SJW since childhood, and that he & AEW had lived
together as man & wife form their first marriage 21 Feb 1854 until the soldiers
death on 17 Jul 1927.
  Widow's pension of $30/mo granted 22 Aug 1927.
  SLW is referred to as priv or coproral in the various records.

  Petition 10 May 1929 by George F Willey of Epping, John C Willey & S Plummer
Willey both of Fremont, states that Ann E Willey widow late of Fremont d 19 May
1929 at Fremont leaving no husband and only next of kin: son George F Willey of
Epping; son John C Willey of Fremont; son S Plummer Willey of Fremont;
requested that Mary A Willey of Fremont be granted admin & that George F Beede
of Fremont be appt'd to take an inventory; Mary A Willey was so appt'd on 11
Jun 1929 with John C Willey & S Plummer Willey both of Fremont as surties with
bond of $200.
  George F Beede presented his inventory on 2 July 1929; no personal property;
real estate $800 consisting of 2a with cottage house, barn & one small out
building, location not stated.
  Final account was given 18 Sep 1930 by Mary A Willey; shows $208.50 paid by
John C Willey "to preserve the real estate;" plus other expenses; approved by
all interested parties, i.e., John C Willey of Fremont, George F Willey of
Canana [sic], & Samuel P Willey of Fremont.

their son J Frank Hartford; she was b 1821 & d 1853 per her gravestone in
Leavitt Cemetery in Fremont.
     He m2 12 Feb 1854 Sarah B Guptill per his marr rec; the date should
probably be 1853 because their dau Sarah Louise was b 29 May 1853, and this
date of birth agrees with the age of Sarah Louise at death as given on her
death rec.
  Residence & Occupation: laborer in Poplin/Fremont in 1850 census; husbandman
in Poplin/Fremont per 1851 deed; Poplin/Fremont in 1853/4 when m2; Fremont in
1853 when dau Sarah Louise was b; Fremont 1857 when son Pierce was b; shoemaker
in Fremont in 1860 census; shoemaker in Fremont c1865 when dau Ann married;
Fremont c1865 when he d.

her mother which happens frequently in such cases.
