MISCELANEOUS ITEMS:
Statement of Charles Lester Buzzel of Northwood NH c1980 [great-grandson of
Joseph F Wiggin]:
Joseph F Wiggin, once of Quincy and East Milton MA, was a blacksmith &
quarryman.  In the central square of Quincy was an exceptionally large granite
horse watering trough when I worked in Boston many years ago.  Because of its
size, and age, this trough was moved to a park somewhere in Quincy to make room
and improve parking facilities for autos.  J F Wiggin did what iron work there
was about that trough.  I read in a Boston paper, some years ago, a story about
which quarry furnished the stone, etc.
Joseph F Wiggin went from Quincy MA to Dicks or Dix Island off the coast of
Maine.  Dicks Island was a huge quarry.  How long there I do no know.  From
there her went to Newmarket.  To the best of my knowledge, he went to Newmarket
some time before my grandmother, Mary A (Wiggin) Burgess [d/o JFW] was 13 years
old.  I remember her telling of being there at that age which would be about
1856.
  Joseph F Wiggin's children were: Mary Adelaid - b 1843 d 1926; and Edwin F -
b 25 Mar 1839 d 19 Oct 1900.  All are buried in Riverside Cemetery Lots
331-332.  The lot was bought by J F Wiggin for $20.00, and I have the original
deed.  There is a Nathaniel Wiggin in Riverside with the others b 10 Aug 1784
and d 14 Nov 1816.  I have no idea what he was to J F Wiggin, but Josephine
(Burgess) Howard [grand-daughter of JFW] always spoke of him as Uncle Nat.
--------------------
Extract from a letter from H Hobart Holly, Historian, Quincy Historical
Society, 8 Adams St, Quincy MA 02169 c1972: ....  The fountain and water trough
that you mention is dated 1891.  It is a round granite structure with carvin
which shows no metal work.  It was originally in Quincy Square and was moved in
the 1930's to its present location at the entrance to Mount Wollaston Cemetery.
The present fountain and watering trough replaced a town pump and watering
trough in the Squarem which of course has long disappeared.  Since there was
metal work in connection with the pump, I would suspect that it was this on
which Mr Wiggin worked prior to 1846.  ...
--------------------
Extract from a letter from Ernest W Maxcy, 114 Chestnut St, Camden ME 04843,
member of the Shore Village (Rockland) Historical Society, 27 Feb 1979: ...Dix
Island...is a small island in the Mussell Ridge channel, about 10 miles from
Rockland by water.  Today it is uninhabited.  The quarry on the island is
grantite.  We are in the heart of one of the greatest granite producing areas
of the country.  Dix Island was named for C A Dixon who operated the quarry.
This is one of hundreds of similar quarries in this vicinity.  The granite
business became big business shortly after the Civil War and lasted until
shortly after the turn of the century.....It is probable, as Dix Island was
accessable only by water that the entire crew lived on the island.  ...

--------------------
The Joseph F Wiggin lot (lots 331 & 332) in Riverside Cemetery in Newmarket
was purchased by him for $20.  From him it passed to his dau Mary A (Wiggin)
Burgess; then to her dau, Lois Josephine (Burgess) Howard; then to her nephew,
Charles Lester Buzzell; he then gave the deed to his dau Wilma Lois
(Buzzell,Towle) Regan on 2 Oct 1972 at which time there was still one empty
grave [per notes of WTR].
