Rev. Benjamin Butler - s/o Malachi Butler & Jemima Daggett of England & Conn; b 9 Apr 1729; d 26 Dec 1804; m May 1753 Dorcas Abbot (b 11 May 1729; d 19 Apr 1789); he grad Harvard College 1752 and then went to Andover MA where he studied theology with a minister there; it was there that he met and married his wife Dorcas Abbot; she was descended from George Abbot who emigrated from Yorkshire, England, in 1640, and was among the first settlers of Andover MA in 1643; this George Abbot marr Hannah Chandler (d/o William & Annie Chandler who came on the same ship as George Abbot in 1640, and settled in Roxbury MA); William & Annie Chandler also had a son, Thomas, who was a diredt ancestor of Hon Zachariah Chandler who was Sec of the Interior c1878; Benjamin & Dorcas Butler remained in Andover MA until the spring of 1754 when they removed to the Square at Nottingham, NH with their infant son Henry; initially they lived where Hon Joseph Cilley lived c1878; subsequently they purchased the proprietor's lot set off the Gov Wentworth in Nottingham and remained there for the rest of their lives; this house remained in the family, and was occupied by Hon James H Butler c1878; Rev Benj Butler was settled as minister at Nottingham Square in 1757 with a settlement of 2,000# old tenor and a salary of 35# sterling; he resigned that post 1 Aug 1770; that church had 1st been organized in 1742 with Stephen Emery (HC 1730) as pastor. Children:

f) Dorcas - triplet b 9 Oct 1766; d 22 Oct 1857; m Jonathan Cilley (eldest s/o Gen Joseph Cilley; lived on the north side of Nottingham; in 1804 they removed to Ohio and never returned; they left descendants in Ohio.
g) Jemima - triplet b 9 Oct 1766; d 14 Oct 1766;
h) James Platts - triplet b 9 Oct 1766; d 19 Oct 1766.

Henry Butler - s/o Benjamin Butler & Dorcas Abbot; b 27 Apr 1754; d 20 Jul 1813; m 11 Apr 1776 Isabella Fisk (b 2 Aug 1757; d 17 Jan 1808; d/o Dr Ebenezer Fisk of Epping & gd/o Rev Ward Cotton, the first settled ordained minister in Hampton {Rev WC married Joanna Rand of Boston MA; after his death she m2 Capt Jonathan Gilman of Exeter; after his death she m3 Dea Ezekiel Morrill of Canterbury; after his death she m4 Dea Joseph Baker of Canterbury; following his death she came to Nottingham and lived with her gdau, Isabella Butler; after the death of Isabella, Joanna continued to live in the Henry Butler household until she herself d 25 Feb 1811 ae 93}); Rev soldier, capt of vol company that went to West Point; later Maj-Gen of the 1st Div of NH Militia for many years; he was preceeded in that position by Gen Thomas Bartlett, and was followed by Gen Joseph Cilley, all three had lived & died at Nottingham Square, and died while holding that office; he was long time Master of the Sullivan Lodge of Masons which met at the house of Gen Joseph Cilley till 1798 when it moved its meeting place to the home of Gen Butler; HB held many state & town offices of trust. Children [mother erroneously called Elizabeth?]:
a) Elizabeth - b 29 Jul 1777; d 12 Jul 1808; m Mar 1799 William Norris as his 2nd wife; lived & died on a farm in Nottingham about 4 mi from the Square, later owned by their gson Abbot Norris. Children: 1) Joanna - b Feb 1800, m Joseph Blake of Raymond; 2) Betsey - b Aug 1802, unm; and 3) William - b Sep 1804, m Abigail Cartland of Lee.

g) Samuel Abbot - b 19 Jul 1789; d 16 Jan 1814; enlisted in cavalry co of Capt John Butler of Nottingham (a cousin of Gen Henry Butler) in War of 1812; later was 1st sergeant and clerk of his co & was stationed in Burlington NY; he was mortally wounded 16 Jan 1814 near the town of Highgate while attempting to stop British smugglers; he was buried at Burlington VT.
