Gen Joseph Cilley - s/o Capt Joseph Cilley & Alice Rawlins; b 1734; d 25 Aug 1799 ae 65; m 4 Nov 1756 Sarah Longfellow (b 17 Nov 1739; d 23 May 1811 ae 75; d/o Jonathan Longfellow & Mercy Clark); he lived where Thomas B Bartlett later lived on the Square; he participated in the attack on Ft William & Mary in 1774; was leader of the company of men from Nottingham, Deerfield & Epsom whom marched to Lexington following word of the battle there; he was apptd major in Poor's 2nd Regt by the NH Legislature; became lt-col in 1776 & on 2 Apr 1777 was apptd Col in the 1st NH regt of 3-yr men in the Continental Army in place of Col Stark who had resigned; fought ar Bemus Heights, at the surrender of Burgoyne, the storming of Stoney Point, Monmouth, and other battles; the source quotes a long 1778 letter from him to Col Thomas Bartlett; on 19 Mar 1779 the NH Assembly gave him a pair of pistols as recognition of his service; after the war he was apptd major-gen of the 1st Div of the NH Militia on 22 Jun 1786, and as such lead the troops that quelled the insurrection that year; he was repeatedly elected representative, senator, and councilor in the State government; he was successively treasurer, vice-president, and president of the Order of Cincinnati in NH. c) Jonathan - b 3 Mar 1752; m Dorcas Butler (d/o Rev Benjamin Butler of Nottingham); settled first in Nottingham & later in Coleraine near Cincinnati. Children: 1) Joseph; 2) Benjamin; 3) Sally; 4) Henry; 5) Jonathan; 6) Bradbury; and 7) Mary.
