Str. Bk. in 1685 he testif. with Walter Winsor who was appar. relat. to Edw.
Melcher. O.A. 28 Aug 1685, and taxed Oct 1691, both at Str. Bk. Bondsman
(Grure or Grare) with Edw. Melcher 1693. In 1694 fined for abs. from gr. j.
(Me); same yr. had Kit. Gr., but was of Portsm. 1695, c 40. Taxed Kit. 1704
and 24 Jan 1708-9. Lists 334a (Portsmouth: fined for not turning out for
muster 18 May 1693), 290 (Kittery: sufferers from the Indians in the Second
War), 296 (Kittery: landowners in 1712), 298 (Kittery: land grant 1694). D.

John Gear - (also spelled Gere, Geare, and Geere) married Sarah Wills, d/o
Thomas and Sarah (Abbot) Wills. He was a juryman in 1694 and d bef 1712.
Sylvanus Tripe, in his will dated 29 Dec 1714, says, "It is my will that there
be a convenient Space of Land allowed at the point before the house for a
common Landing place for them [his children and heirs] & for the said landing
place or water Side a Convenient quantity of Land next to the widow Gear her
Land for a highway for them to the Country road."
On 4 Feb 1728/9 Sarah Gere of Portsmouth deeded to her son Samuel Gere of
Kittery and son-in-law John Abbot of Portsmouth a dwelling house and thirteen
acres, granted to Richard Abbot 13 Jun 1659, by him sold to Walter Abbot, and
from him descended to this daughter, Sarah Wills, and "from her descended to
me." [York Deeds XII 368].
John and Sarah (Abbot) Gear had son Samuel, the same undobtedly who married
7 Jan 1724/5, Abigail Hodsdon, and daughter Joanna, who was baptized with
Samuel 17 April 1715 and evidently married John Abbot. Another daughter may
have been Abigail, who married John Thomas 24 Dec 1733 [three paragraphs above
all from Stackpole, Old Kittery, p84].CHRONOLOGICAL ITEMS
1633 - among the records of the Laconia Company's trading post at
Newitchawanick [now Berwick ME?] is a list of "Beaver disposed of since the
first of April 1633" which includes the entry "To John Grear for 3 booshels of
corne, 2 [pounds of?] beav."
A letter endorsed "Jn. Raymonds last letter, 1633, to Mr Ambrose Gibbins at
Newichawannick" begins as follows: "Mr. Gibbibs - You shall rec. by the bearer
Grear John ? three bundles of lace with six bundles of tape wh'ch I pray rec.
for ould favors, for each wh'ch owes me 2 lb. 3 ounces of beaver, whereof I
pray take notice of. Also I have sent you by him a rowle of tabacca belonging
to the company wh'ch you may please to put off according to y'r discrassion....

These items make it appear that a John Grear brought some materials to the
trading post at Newitchawanick from England, and was to be paid for them in
beaver skins. They could possibly refer to the John Gear who later lived in
the Kittery - Portsmouth area.
1684 Mar 10 - at a hearing held in England before the Lords Committee of the
Coucil of Trade and Plantations concerning Cranfield's administration of the
Province of NH, mention is made of a John Geare who was apparently imprisoned
in NH because of his inability to pay a fine in cash [NH State Papers 1/564ff].
1689 Dec 19 - We John Gear & Sary my wife, and Richard Cutts & Joanna my
wife, both daus/o Mr Thomas Wells of Kittery ME, and Elias Stillman of
Portsmouth & Lewsee my wife, the relect & adminx to Mr Thomas Wells, for 45#
paid by Mr Frances Mercer of Portsmouth, a parcel of land sold to Mr Thomas
Wells by Mr John Cutt of Portsmouth, deceased, adjoining Mr Hulls? land on the
west & another piece adjoining Mr Hulls? wharf & warehouse as bounded in Mr
Cutts deed. Sig: Elias Stillman, Lucy Stilman (mark), John Gear, Sary Gear
(mark), Richard Cutt, Joana Cutt. Wit: John Pirkens Jr, John West & Elizabeth

1689-1708 - John Gear (Geare, Gere) appears as witness in 4/19, 4/20, 5/78,
7/209, 9/25 [NH Prov Deeds per index card].
1693 May 18 - John Geere appears on a list of NH militiamen fined for not
appearing with their arms [Holbrook, NH Residents 1633 - 1699, 1979, p42, no
other people with the names Gear, Geer, or Grear, etc. appear in this
collection of lists. The militia list is printed in NH State papers 2/106].
1694 Jul 4 - John Gear in named as a juror in the York Court of Common Pleas
[Allen, Prov & Court Records of Maine, Vol IV, 1958, p29].
1694 Oct 2 - John Gear was fined 13s 4d for failing to appear for duty on
the grand jury [Allen, Prov & Court Records of Maine, Vol IV, 1958, p30].
1712 Sep - John Gear, deceased, is listed with yearly income of 3# in

1712 Dec 7 - Sarah Gear "owned Ye covenant & was Baptized" at Portsmouth

1728/9 Feb 4 - Sarah Gere of Portsmouth, widow, for love & affection,

Portsmouth, in equal halves, a dwelling house and 13 acres of land granted by
the Selectmen of Kittery to Richard Abbet 13 Jun 1659; by him sold to Walter
Abbet; from him descended to his daughter Sarah Wills; from her descended to me
